Distance reiki and how it works
What Is Distance Reiki and How Does It Work?
If you have never experienced distance Reiki before, it is completely understandable to wonder how somebody can send Reiki to you without being in the same room.
Distance Reiki works according to the same principles as an in-person Reiki session. The main difference is that there is no physical contact and you can receive it wherever you are.
What is Reiki energy?
Reiki is a Japanese energy practice based on the idea that universal life force energy flows through all living things.
This energy is known by different names in different traditions. In Japan it is called ki, while other practices may call it chi, qi or life force energy.
When this energy feels balanced and able to flow freely, we may feel calmer, more grounded and more like ourselves. Stress, illness, emotional strain and difficult experiences can sometimes leave us feeling depleted, heavy or out of balance.
Reiki is used to gently support the natural flow and balance of energy within and around the body.
What does a Reiki practitioner do?
A Reiki practitioner does not use their own personal energy or decide what your body should do.
Instead, the practitioner acts as a channel for Reiki. I connect to the Reiki energy and direct it towards you with a clear intention.
Reiki is believed to flow where it is most needed. This means you do not always need to know what to ask for or explain everything you are going through.
You can tell me about a particular concern if you would like to, but it is also fine to simply say that you feel anxious, exhausted, emotional, unable to sleep or not quite yourself.
How can Reiki work from a distance?
Within Reiki practice, energy is not considered to be limited by physical distance. A practitioner can therefore connect with somebody who is in another room, another town or another country.
For a distance session, I use focused intention and traditional Reiki symbols to establish a connection with the person receiving the Reiki.
One of these is the Reiki distance symbol. It is traditionally used by Reiki practitioners to offer Reiki beyond physical contact and connect with someone who is not present.
I usually work with your name, photograph and the intention for your session. These give me a clear focus while I connect with your energy and begin the Reiki.
Once the connection has been made, I allow the Reiki to flow naturally. I may be drawn to focus on particular areas of the body, chakras, emotions or patterns within your energy.
Do I have to believe in Reiki?
You do not need to understand Reiki or know anything about energy work before receiving a session.
You also do not need to concentrate on receiving it. You can relax, sleep, read or continue with your normal day while I work.
The best approach is simply to be open to the experience without putting pressure on yourself to feel something particular.
What happens during a Personal Reiki Session?
Before your session, I contact you to arrange a suitable time and ask whether there is anything you would particularly like support with.
At the agreed time, I connect with your energy and begin sending Reiki. Your session is focused entirely on you for either 30 or 60 minutes.
As I work, I may be drawn to different areas of your energy. Where appropriate, your session may also include chakra balancing, aura cleansing, cord cutting or an energy body scan.
You do not need to join a call or have your camera on. You can simply make yourself comfortable at home.
Afterwards, I contact you with personal feedback and tell you about anything I noticed during your session.
What might Reiki feel like?
Everyone experiences Reiki differently. Some people notice the energy very clearly, while others experience it more subtly.
You might notice:
- Warmth or coolness
- Tingling or gentle pulsing sensations
- A feeling of heaviness or lightness
- Deep relaxation or sleepiness
- A quieter mind
- Emotions coming to the surface
- A sense of calm, peace or release
You may also see colours, remember something you had forgotten or feel as though the energy is moving around different parts of your body.
Some people do not feel much during the session but notice afterwards that they feel calmer, sleep better or respond differently to something that had been bothering them.
There is no correct way to experience Reiki, and feeling very little does not mean that you have done anything wrong.
How does Continuous Reiki Support work?
A focused Reiki session takes place at an agreed time. Continuous Reiki Support works differently because I use my Reiki crystal grid to hold the Reiki intention in place for a longer period.
My grid contains crystals and Reiki symbols arranged around an Antahkarana symbol. I charge the grid with Reiki and place your details and intention within it.
The crystals help me hold and maintain the focus of the Reiki grid. I connect with and tend to the grid each day to keep the intention clear and the Reiki support flowing.
This allows the Reiki to be held for you continuously, day and night, for 24 hours, 7 days or 4 weeks.
You do not need to stop what you are doing or receive the Reiki at a particular time. You can work, sleep and continue with your normal routine while the support remains in place.
What is Daily Personal Reiki?
Daily Personal Reiki for 7 Days is different from Continuous Reiki Support.
With Continuous Reiki Support, your details are held within my Reiki grid throughout the chosen period.
With Daily Personal Reiki, I connect with you personally and send you a separate, focused Reiki boost every day for seven days.
This gives me an opportunity to work with how your energy is presenting on each individual day. I also provide updates and feedback throughout the week.
What happens after Reiki?
Some people feel an immediate sense of calm or lightness. For others, the experience continues to unfold gradually over the following hours or days.
You might feel tired and want to rest, or you may feel lighter and more energised. Emotions can sometimes come to the surface as you process what has shifted.
It can be helpful to drink some water, rest if you need to and give yourself a little time before rushing into something demanding.
Can distance Reiki be sent to somebody else?
Yes. You can purchase Reiki for another person, provided they know about it and are happy to receive it.
Distance Reiki can also be offered to animals, homes, rooms and other spaces. The basic principle is the same. I create a clear energetic connection and direct the Reiki towards the intended recipient or place.
Is distance Reiki the same as an in-person session?
The Reiki principles are the same, but the experience is slightly different because there is no physical contact.
Many people prefer distance Reiki because they can stay in their own familiar surroundings. There is no travelling, no unfamiliar treatment room and no need to speak on the phone unless they want to.
It can be especially helpful for people who are tired, anxious, unwell, caring for somebody else or simply more comfortable at home.
Would you like to experience distance Reiki?
If you would like focused Reiki at an agreed time, you can choose a 30 or 60-minute Personal Reiki Session.
If you would prefer a gentle, lower-cost introduction, you can try 24 hours of Continuous Reiki Support for £5.

If you are unsure which option would suit you, my short quiz will give you one main recommendation and a second option to consider.
Reiki is a complementary wellbeing practice intended to support relaxation and emotional wellbeing. It is not a replacement for medical care, medication, veterinary care or professional mental health support.
