Cord Cutting
What Is Cord Cutting in Reiki (and How It Can Help You Let Go Gently)
A grounded, reassuring look at Reiki cord cutting — without fear, force or dramatic rituals.
Do you ever feel as though part of you is still tied to someone, even though the relationship or situation has ended? You might find yourself thinking about them more than you want to, replaying conversations in your mind or feeling emotionally affected by a connection you thought you had moved on from.
In Reiki and other energy practices, this is sometimes described in terms of energetic cords. Cord cutting is a way of working with those connections with the intention of releasing what no longer feels helpful or healthy.
It isn't about erasing memories, removing love or pretending that somebody was never important to you. Instead, the intention is to help you let go of some of the emotional and energetic weight connected with the situation and create more space for yourself in the present.
What Are Energetic Cords?
Energetic cords are a way of describing the emotional and energetic connections we form with other people through relationships, shared experiences and significant moments in our lives.
Many of these connections feel positive and supportive. It is completely natural to continue feeling connected to people we care about and to experiences that have shaped us.
Sometimes, however, a connection can begin to feel draining or difficult, particularly when it is associated with unresolved emotions, conflict, stress or repeated thoughts about the past.
You might feel:
- Emotionally stuck or preoccupied with someone
- Drained by thoughts of a particular relationship or situation
- Pulled back into old emotional patterns
- As though you have moved on logically but not completely emotionally
- Ready to move forward but finding it difficult to fully let go
Not every emotional connection needs to be released. Cord cutting is simply one option when a connection feels as though it is taking up more emotional or energetic space than you would like.
What Is Cord Cutting in Reiki?
Reiki cord cutting is focused energy work carried out with the intention of gently releasing an energetic attachment that no longer feels supportive.
Despite the name, I don't approach cord cutting as something harsh or dramatic. There is no need for fear, force or elaborate rituals. My approach is gentle and focused on releasing what you are ready to let go of while supporting your own sense of balance and emotional wellbeing.
The intention isn't to remove your memories or feelings for another person. You can still care about somebody, value what a relationship meant to you or remember an important part of your life without feeling so energetically tied to it.
You also don't need to tell me every detail of what happened. You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.
When Might Someone Choose Cord Cutting?
People often become interested in cord cutting during periods of change, particularly when they feel ready to move forward but something from the past still feels emotionally present.
This might relate to:
- A past romantic relationship
- A friendship that has ended or changed
- A difficult family relationship
- A person or situation you find yourself repeatedly thinking about
- A work relationship or experience that continues to affect you
- An emotional connection that simply feels heavier than you would like it to
Cord cutting isn't about deciding that another person is bad or that a relationship meant nothing. It is about focusing on your own energy, boundaries and ability to move forward.
What Might You Notice Afterwards?
There isn't one particular way you should expect to feel after Reiki or cord cutting. Experiences vary from person to person.
Some people describe feeling calmer, lighter or less emotionally caught up in the situation. Others notice more subtle changes over time, such as thinking about the person less often or feeling less affected when they do.
You may notice:
- A greater sense of calm
- Feeling less emotionally caught up in the situation
- Less mental replay around a person or experience
- A clearer sense of your own boundaries
- Feeling more able to focus on the present
You may also notice very little immediately. There is no particular sensation or emotional response that you need to have for the session to have been worthwhile.

Is Cord Cutting Right for You?
You don't have to completely understand the idea of energetic cords to decide that you would like some support with letting go. You may simply recognise that a relationship or experience still feels emotionally present and that you are ready to create some space around it.
Cord cutting is not about forcing yourself to forget somebody or suddenly stop caring. For me, it is a gentle form of energy work centred on you, your boundaries and your intention to move forward.
If that is what you would like your Reiki session to focus on, choose the 30-minute Personal Reiki Session and let me know that you would like cord cutting included.

Letting go doesn't mean that something didn't matter. Sometimes it simply means deciding that it no longer needs to take up the same amount of space in your present.
